Friday afternoon, before a single vow was said, Kaitlyn's aunt and uncle were already out on the back patio, on their knees, piecing together a dance floor. The exact colors Kaitlyn had asked for. Nobody hired that out. They just did it, together, while the rest of the family drifted in and out with snacks and iced tea, half-helping, half-watching the oaks throw shade across the patio as the afternoon went on.

That's the part of this wedding I keep coming back to. Not the ceremony (though the ceremony was lovely), but Friday. The building part. The part where a family shows up a full day early and just starts working alongside each other, because that's what the weekend is for.

By Saturday, the whole property had that easy, full feeling it gets when a family has already settled in. At the welcome table, guests walked past photos of Kaitlyn and Cobi from every year they'd known each other: school, and all the years after, right up to that morning. Here's a small thing we did that nobody but us will ever notice. Before the ceremony, those photos faced the guests as they arrived. After, we turned every single one around, so when the same guests walked back toward the reception, they saw the fronts again, not the blank backs of picture frames. It's such a small thing. Then the dancing started, and it did not stop. Great DJ, a full bar, kegs. Kaitlyn and Cobi's people danced harder than we did, and we've hosted a lot of dance floors. Because the family was staying the night, nobody had to watch the clock. I said my goodnights and let them keep going. That's the whole point of the overnight stay: nobody's rushing anyone off a dance floor when the bed is thirty feet away.

The next morning, there was no scramble. No shuttle to catch. Just a family, still under one roof, taking their time packing up a dance floor they'd built with their own hands two days before, the same dance floor Kaitlyn had danced her first married dance on.

That's the weekend, really. Not one night. A family that showed up Friday and built something together, and left Sunday still together.
